We recently had a customer share photos in one of our RV Facebook groups showing impact damage caused by accidentally leaving the truck tailgate down while towing. Unfortunately, this is a more common mistake than many RV owners realize, especially when hooking up quickly, getting distracted, or rushing during departure.
On many fifth wheel and gooseneck setups, leaving the tailgate down can result in the front cap of the RV contacting the tailgate during turns, dips, uneven terrain, or while pulling away. In some cases, the damage can include:
- Cracked or damaged RV front caps
- Tailgate dents or destruction
- Broken rear truck glass
- Bent bed rails
- Paint and fiberglass damage
- Trim and molding damage
Sometimes the damage happens immediately when turning sharply, while other times it occurs during uneven transitions entering or leaving a campground, fuel station, or driveway.
One simple habit can help prevent an expensive repair:
Always double-check your tailgate position before towing away.
A good departure checklist should include:
- Tailgate up and secured
- Hitch jaws locked
- Breakaway cable connected
- Safety chains attached if applicable
- Landing gear fully raised
- Electrical cord plugged in
- Steps, slides, and awnings secured
- Tire pressure visually checked
Even experienced RV owners can overlook small things when distracted, tired, or traveling in bad weather.
Travel safely everyone, and don’t hesitate to slow down and double-check your setup before pulling out.
