Fifth wheel pin box inspection

Join me in the RV shop in this video as I inspect the fifth wheel pin box on this Alliance Fifth Wheel. Note the telltale signs of flex in the pin box and front cap of this beautiful fifth wheel trailer. There are a lot of different types of fifth wheel pin boxes, but much of the maintenance will be the same or very similar.

Visual fifth wheel pin box inspection tips

The first thing you will want to do is a thorough visual inspection of the pin box. Look for any signs of wear or damage.

Check that there are no missing or loose components. Confirm all nuts and bolts are in place. Nuts and bolts will have a required torque rating from the manufacturer. You can confirm the torque settings with the manufacturer of the frame or look it up on their website.

Take note of any paint or powder coating that is damaged or starting to come off. Exposing bare metal can lead to rust. Touch up any spots where bare metal has been exposed.
Factory welds are unlikely to fail under normal operating conditions; however, it only takes a minute to inspect them for possible cracks. This is also a good time to check the 7-way cord, connections, break-away switch and cable, lube disk, capture plates, and anything else that’s been added.

Inspecting the fifth-wheel pin box is crucial to ensure the safety and proper functioning of your fifth-wheel trailer. Here’s a guide on how to inspect a fifth-wheel pin box:

  1. Visual Inspection: Start with a visual inspection of the entire pin box. Look for any signs of damage, cracks, or rust. Check the welds and connections for integrity.
  2. Check for Loose Bolts: Inspect all bolts and fasteners on the pin box. Make sure they are tight and secure. If you find any loose bolts, tighten them to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  3. Examine the Kingpin: Inspect the kingpin for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure that it is securely attached to the pin box. If there are visible issues, consider replacing the kingpin.
  4. Inspect the Mounting Brackets: Check the mounting brackets that attach the pin box to the trailer frame. Look for any signs of stress, cracks, or deformation. Ensure that the mounting brackets are in good condition.
  5. Evaluate the Pivot Mechanism: If your fifth wheel has a pivoting or rotating pin box, inspect the pivot mechanism for smooth operation. Lubricate the pivot points according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  6. Check for Play or Movement: Test the pin box for any play or movement. There should be minimal to no play in the connection between the pin box and the fifth-wheel trailer. Excessive movement may indicate worn components.
  7. Inspect Rubber Shock Absorbers: If your pin box is equipped with rubber shock absorbers, inspect them for signs of wear or damage. Replace any damaged or worn shock absorbers.
  8. Examine the Air Ride System (if applicable): If your fifth-wheel pin box has an air ride system, inspect the airbags, lines, and fittings for any leaks or damage. Ensure that the air ride system is functioning correctly.
  9. Check Wiring and Electrical Connections: If your pin box has integrated electrical components, such as sensors or lights, inspect the wiring and connections. Make sure there are no exposed wires or loose connections.
  10. Verify Safety Chains and Latches: Inspect the safety chains and latches that secure the trailer to the towing vehicle. Ensure they are in good condition and operate smoothly.
  11. Refer to the Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines and maintenance recommendations for your specific fifth-wheel pin box. Follow any specified lubrication intervals and other maintenance requirements.
  12. Test Hitch Operation: If your fifth wheel is equipped with a sliding hitch, test its operation to ensure it moves smoothly and locks securely.

Regular inspections and maintenance of the fifth-wheel pin box are essential for safe towing. If you notice any issues during the inspection, address them promptly or seek professional assistance for repairs.
