The Problem: Inadequate Installation of Power Cord

An RV owner discovered that their 50 amp short cord was inadequately installed on the metal skirting of their RV. The installation lacked a proper bracket or backing, causing the mounting screws to pull right through the aluminum sheeting as tension built when the power cord was used. This issue not only risked damaging the cord but also separated the rear wall connection of the power, potentially allowing water ingress and ultimately leading to a short circuit.

Dustin’s Solution: Reinforcement with an L-Bracket

Upon witnessing the problem, Dustin promptly advised the owner on an effective solution. We recommended the installation of an L-bracket crafted from sheet metal. This simple yet sturdy enhancement secures the power cord twist-lock into place by anchoring it to the bottom of the wall, providing a robust mounting surface. This reinforcement is expected to prevent any future damage and ensure the long-term functionality of the power connection.

Why This Matters: Preventing Damage and Ensuring Safety

Properly securing power connections in your RV not only extends the life of your electrical components but also safeguards against potential hazards like water penetration, which can cause shorts and further damage. By addressing these issues immediately, you preserve both your RV and your peace of mind.

Proactive Maintenance: Inspect Regularly

To maintain safety and efficiency, we urge all RV owners to regularly inspect their power cord connections and adapters. Look for signs of wear, damage, or improper installation, and take the necessary steps to reinforce or replace components as needed. Regular inspections and maintenance can preempt issues before they escalate into costly repairs or dangerous situations.
