Why Regular Tow Vehicle Inspections Are Critical Before Hitting the Road

By Dustin Simpson California RV Specialists – Lodi, California

When it comes to RVing, most travelers focus on the comforts of their rig, the beauty of the destination, or the miles of freedom ahead. But too often, one critical aspect of RV safety is overlooked: the tow package. Whether you’re towing a fifth wheel, travel trailer, or flat towing a vehicle behind a motorhome, your safety—and that of everyone on the road—depends on a properly functioning towing setup.

At California RV Specialists, we’ve seen firsthand how many RVers unknowingly hit the road with compromised or dangerously installed towing equipment. From botched DIY jobs to low-quality installations by general repair shops, we’ve uncovered issues that could have easily led to on-road disasters.

What Can Go Wrong?

During recent inspections, we’ve encountered serious and surprisingly common problems such as:

  • Missing hardware – bolts or nuts not installed at all
  • Loose or under-torqued bolts – posing serious risk of failure under load
  • Worn or rusted-out brackets and mounts – reducing strength and stability
  • Improperly installed braking systems – including brake units mounted upside down or in unsafe locations
  • Frayed or unsafe electrical wiring – which can cause trailer lights or brakes to fail unexpectedly

Each of these issues increases the chance of tow system failure—and many aren’t visible with just a glance.

Why Tow Package Inspections Matter

Your tow package is the critical link between your RV and your vehicle. It’s the mechanical handshake that transfers control, braking, and stability to your trailer. If even one component fails, the results can be catastrophic:

  • Loss of braking control during stops or downhill travel
  • Trailer sway or full detachment at highway speeds
  • Electrical system failures—brake lights, turn signals, or brakes themselves
  • Emergency roadside incidents in remote areas, ruining your trip

What’s more, improperly installed tow setups may void warranties, fail DOT inspections, or even be found liable in accidents.

What Should Be Inspected?

At California RV Specialists, we offer comprehensive tow package inspections to ensure your setup is safe, legal, and ready for the miles ahead. Our inspection includes:

  • Hitch & Receiver Mount Condition – Ensuring correct alignment, fitment, and strength
  • Bolt Torque and Structural Integrity – Confirming all fasteners are secure and tightened to spec
  • Brake Controller & Wiring Function – Verifying proper operation, routing, and signal strength
  • Supplemental Braking System Setup – Ensuring correct placement and compatibility with your vehicle
  • Breakaway System, Safety Cables & Chains – Confirming all safety devices are functional and correctly installed

We don’t just inspect—we document. If we find issues, we’ll walk you through the repairs and help ensure everything meets or exceeds manufacturer and DOT safety standards.

DIY Isn’t Always Safer or Cheaper

Many owners attempt tow package installations themselves or rely on auto shops with little RV-specific experience. Unfortunately, this often leads to shortcuts or dangerous oversights. Unlike a standard car trailer, RVs are heavier, longer, and require more precise setups—especially when it comes to integrated braking systems, weight distribution hitches, and tow bar installations.

You wouldn’t drive with bald tires or faulty brakes—so don’t tow with an unverified setup.

Peace of Mind for Every Mile

Whether you’re preparing for a weekend getaway or a cross-country journey, don’t take chances with your safety. If you’ve recently:

  • Installed a tow package
  • Purchased a used RV or tow vehicle
  • Changed vehicles or trailers
  • Haven’t had a professional inspection in the last 12 months

…it’s time for a proper check-up.
