Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning the military personnel who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is observed each year on the last Monday of May and also marks the unofficial start of summer travel season for many RV owners.
As RVers hit the road for the long weekend, it’s important to pause and remember the true meaning behind the holiday while enjoying time with family, friends, and the freedom to travel this great country.

History & Origins of Memorial Day
Originally Known as Decoration Day
Memorial Day began after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” when families and communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags.
Official Birthplace
While many towns claim to have started the tradition, the federal government officially recognized Waterloo, New York as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966.
First National Observance
The first large, organized observance took place at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, honoring Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.
Federal Holiday Status
Memorial Day became an official federal holiday and was moved to the last Monday in May under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971.
Traditions & Observances
National Moment of Remembrance
Americans are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Flag Etiquette
The U.S. flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day.
Red Poppies
Many people wear red poppies in remembrance, inspired by the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields.”
Ceremonies & Memorials
Parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and placing flags on graves at national cemeteries—such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—are common ways Americans honor fallen service members.
A Message to Our RV Community 🇺🇸

As you travel this Memorial Day weekend, we wish you safe travels, meaningful moments, and time well spent with those you love.
RV Safety Reminder Before You Roll
Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest RV travel weekends of the year. Before hitting the road:
- Perform a full pre-trip inspection
- Function test LP gas, water, electrical, slides, jacks, brakes, and lights
- Check tires, wheel bearings, suspension, and brake condition
- Cycle everything at home before you leave
A few minutes of prep can prevent major issues on the road and help ensure a smooth, safe trip.
